A Finely Carved Chinese Footed Bowl made of one piece of Huamu Burl wood

A Finely Carved Chinese Footed Bowl made of one piece of Huamu Burl wood of a
brilliant richly figured orange brown colour
A scholar’s object
17th / 18th Century – Qing Dynasty (1736 – 1795)
Size: 8cm high, 14cm dia. – 3¼ ins high – 5½ ins dia.
The extraordinary thing about this bowl, somewhat uninspiring at first glance, is the manner in which the design has been controlled. Although plain and unornamented the beauty of its form, markings and colouring has great appeal. The Doaist Chinese scholar would have found it a wonderfully mysterious and magical object. Placed on a stand in the scholar’s studio the bowl would have been viewed as a natural phenomena enhanced by man to create a heavenly joint work of man and nature.
