A Fine English Silver Mounted Coconut Cup

A Fine English Silver Mounted Coconut Cup
Stamped to the foot with the makers mark of Lewis Haman
London, Circa 1752
Size: 12.5cm high – 5 ins high
The shell of the coconut has for many centuries been the raw material for all kinds of carved object and utensil including flasks, cups, bowls and spoons. Before the advent of Captain Cook’s discovery of the South Seas, coconuts, as early imports to Europe, like ostrich eggs were regarded as great rarities. As prized and costly objects they were worked by skilled craftsmen and converted into silver mounted goblets, cups and wine jugs.
