Portrait cameo’s and miniatures are essentially private images, and the form seems to have first arisen in England around the mid 16th century at the court of Henry VIII. Portrait pendants were popular and the fashion for carved portraits seems to have been begun by the naturalistically coloured miniature wax portraits of intricate workmanship that were introduced as a novelty to the courts of Europe during the 16th century.
