New Guinea was discovered in 1524 by J.de Meneses, but was named by Ortiz de Retes in 1545. The mapping of the coast line was performed piecemeal by many explorers, but today the highland interior is still not fully explored and remains un-mapped with many new plants and species waiting to be discovered.
