Mineralogy was a passionate pursuit amongst wealthy Victorians. Amateur lapidarists would collect and polish stones from British beaches, and geology was pursued as a leisurely hobby. Spectacular field trips would be arranged in picturesque locations such as the Alps for grand tourists with geological hammers to find mineral specimens. These spar towers were purchased as a reminder of their experience.
