With old ink inscribed labels reading ‘earring Solomon Islands’ and ‘ear drop Malayta Isd. Solomon group’
Late 19th Century
Size: 4cm long – 1½ long (max)
The surface of the shaped Canarium nut has been carefully covered with Parmarium resin and then finely inlaid with cut pieces of Nautilus shell. Men throughout the Solomon Islands pierced their earlobes and would wear an assortment of decorative earrings, plugs and sticks.
