Cambridge University is the second oldest university in the English speaking world which grew from an association of scholars in the City, formed in around 1209 reputedly by scholars escaping from Oxford after a fight with local townsmen.
The arms of the university were granted in 1573 by Robert Cooke, Clarenceux King of Arms and a graduate of St John’s college to the then Chancellor, Sir William Burghley and to the members and scholars of the university and their successors.
Point scoring Oxford men like to point to their shield being charged with an open book while the book on the Cambridge University shield is not only closed but guarded by four lions!
