Influenced by Thai and Laotian iconography this ‘walking’ figure of the Buddha, his right hand raised in a gesture of reassurance, is to the Burmese a principal focus of Buddhist veneration and is the pivotal character in Burmese art.
Among the various crafts practised in Burma, lacquer is one of the most important and popular and is used for a variety of artworks.
