A rare large rhinoceros horn gunstock probably made in Colonial South Africa

A rare large rhinoceros horn gunstock probably made in Colonial South Africa

Circa 1830-1840

Size: 68.5cm long
Made from a massive African white rhinoceros anterior horn, this
gunstock more naturally absorbs the shock of the fired bullet than does
any wood.
The record length for the horn of the species ceratotherum simum is
over 150 centimetres. Certainly this gunstock must have been crafted
out of a horn approaching 100 centimetres.
