A very rare Dapedium Politum Fossil Fish, formed of Whitby Jet
Early Jurassic Period 200 Million Years Old
Size: 15.5cm high x 19.5cm wide x 7.5cm deep
Dapedium were deep bodied fish oval in outline and laterally
compressed. It had large dorsal, anal and pelvic fins and a fan shaped
tail. The skull bones were distinctively ornamented with round
projections and the eyes were surrounded by a ring of plates. At the
front of the mouth were nipping upright teeth, which gave way to a
pavement of circular crushing teeth at the back. This particular and important fossil Dapedium is formed of Whitby Jet
and has a remarkable black jewel like surface. It is one of only twenty
known specimens of fossil jet fish.
