Two rare and large Palaeolithic flint blade cores, found in France, at Abilly Indre Et Loire. 'Motte de Beurre'

These blade cores were used by prehistoric man for producing the blanks
to be later retouched into tools. They were often kept and carried from
settlement to settlement.
This use of flint cores represented a technique far removed from a
concept of bashing rocks together to produce struck flakes. It is
called 'the Levallois technique' after the Paris suburb from whose
gravel pits the original artefacts came from. It is designed to produce
flakes and blades of predetermined dimensions from a flint nodule.
There may be triangular, elongated or squat but the important point is
that they are not randomly produced.
