These lure hooks are cut from trochus tesselatus shell, the turtle shell barbs are attached by lashings of fibre whose ends form hackles on which trade beads, cloth or feathers are sometimes threaded. In the Solomon Islands fishing is a male occupation done with or without rods using a variety of hooks trolling or spinning from the back of a moving canoe.
Harry Beasley records that these are the most attractive sort of hook from the Solomon’s and that it is difficult to attach a particular locality to this type unless it is known where they have been made. This collection of eleven hooks is therefore valuable in having a 19th century label detailing an accurate Island location.
