During the Renaissance ivory turning was regarded as a suitable pastime for blue bloods, and monarchs such as the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague were obsessed with their lathes and their ability to turn items in wood and ivory. European aristocrats were still turning ivory as a leisure pursuit in the 19th century, and expensive, intricate, handmade lathes were produced to satisfy their requirement for the precision and accuracy needed by their hobby.
