At its peak in the 15th century the Duchy of Burgundy was one of the most wealthy and powerful states in Europe. Burgundian art in the early 15th century had begun to break away from the delicate flowing curves of the International Gothic style and figurative sculpture became more vigorous, forthright and lifelike.
In 1369 Philip the Bold had greatly enlarged the Duchy by marriage to Margaret of Flanders and this later led to a cross fertilisation of artistically stylistic sources between Burgundy, the Netherlands and Northern France, with artists from all of these areas working under the patronage of the Burgundian court.
