Sailors often sold the raw materials they brought back with them from long whaling trips to cane manufacturers who were responding to the growing popular market for nautical canes. The sperm whale’s teeth were discarded and regarded as surplus to requirements by the whaling Captains who were solely interested in the whale’s blubber and spermaceti that was rendered down and sold for oil.
