Botanical models of fruit and vegetables were originally made to aid scientific research and agricultural production. These beautifully carved elephant ivory examples were one hundred years ago representing exotic, rare virtually unknown and unusual specimens that could excite visions of distant lands. Now they have become commonplace, easily obtainable, and the ingredients of many recipes from the Indian subcontinent.
