The Zaramo prefer to sit on mats and their stools are regarded as treasured family heirlooms rather than part of the every day household furnishings. The stools are used for ceremonies and rituals and the type of stool used by a person is a token of their rank and status. Sacred objects are not permitted to be laid on the ground and these were always placed on a stool.
