The origins of this art lies in the nomadic cultures of Central and Eastern Asia. These bronze appliqués were probably affixed as embellishments to leather or cloth as indicated by their attachment loops, and were trappings for a horse. The lives of nomadic peoples of central Asia and Mongolia were dominated by horses and many are still today superb horsemen.
Cast by the lost wax method, the hollows would have once contained inlay giving these small sculptures even greater definition and feeling of movement.
