Seemingly influenced by Neapolitan gouache scenes this painting was most probably produced by a British sailor who worked with a brush to record his home town rather than in wool-work. Before the days of photography water colour painting was used by both the Royal Navy and Armed Forces as means of recording enemy positions, and many artists-craftsmen learnt their skills whilst in service.
