These flints were shaped by percussion at quarries where superior flint was available and then traded in this form. They would then be worked into a highly finished, polished adze by the process of grinding or used as currency.
In some remote areas of the world these ancient techniques are still used by a handful of hunting and gathering peoples who are the last to use stone for tools and weapons. They are the last heirs to a technological tradition that made it possible for early man to survive, and to establish the base of mankind’s cultural development.
