A Tsonga headman is described by H.A Junod in ‘The Life of a South African Tribe’ in 1912 as putting two spoonfuls of snuff he has made and prepared aside for his maternal and paternal ancestors saying ‘here is some tabacco ! come all of you and take a pinch and do not be angry with me when I snuff, nor say that I deprive you of your share’.
