The Royal Victorian petrifying wells of Matlock Bath in Derbyshire created these objects as souvenirs. A calcareous deposit is formed by drops of water filtering through tufa from the roof of the well which in time assumes the hardness of stone changing the object upon which it drops into a fossil like curiosity.
