The geographically four pronged island of Sulawesi lies next to the thousand Islands of the Moluccas; the fabled spice islands of history. Mostly covered in forest, Sulawesi is less developed than the rest of Indonesia and still has a mainly agricultural based economy. The Toraja people still build their traditional boat-shaped houses on wood platforms, and practice the animist traditions and rituals of their ancestors whilst acknowledging Christianity. the Toraja are renowned for their elaborate funeral ceremonies and burial sites in cliffside caves.
