The important commercial port of Trapani in southern Sicily was situated close by large and extensive coral banks. The Guild of Coral Workers was established in 1628 and there developed in 17th and 18th centuries a lucrative trade in the highly accomplished coral and goldsmiths worked objects that were produced to sell to catholic clergy and rich merchants of Europe.
