This small Renaissance vase has a beautiful form carved in the antique style from a rare specimen of marble.
There is an amphora carved in this Alabastro Fiorito in the Villa Borghese Museum in Rome. The colour of the striations in marble can differ from a pale yellow to rose to a deep golden brown. It was sometimes used to great effect by ancient Romans for the carved busts and shoulders of their more important classical marble heads.
