A rare French carved limewood and painted gesso group of two angels

A rare French carved limewood and painted gesso group of two angels sheltering Christ and two Apostles, dressed in monks habits.
Perhaps from a choir stall or a rood screen
Early 16th century
Size : 25.5 cm high x 22 cm wide
10 ins high x 8¾ ins wide
French and English craftsmen seemed to have been at their happiest when working in wood and much of their production has luckily survived the disorders of the refomation and the degredations of the restorations of the 19th century. Many rood screens were taken down, but parts were often collected and kept as examples typical of church character.
