Sashes and garters were made by the Potawatomi and Ojibway peoples with a loom which allowed for relatively quick production, compared to the bandoleer bags which took over a year to make, and for more easily controlled patterning. The women experienced with differnt designs drawn from several sources including illustrations contained in contemporary popular publications and printed textile patterns. They successfully adapted the pictorial conventions of European and American culture for the decoration of items of traditional, but updated formal native American dress.
