This very unusual section of early New York underground water pipe was collected in the 19th century when the system was renewed.
The Romans were the first to extensively use wood for piping in their comparatively sophisticated water and heating systems, and wood went on being used until the invention of cast iron in the 19th century, followed by concrete and plastics in the mid-20th century.
