A Fine Pair of Exceptionally Well Engraved Early Victorian Blond Powder Horns
One horn plug missing
First Half of the 19th Century
Size : 45 cm long – 17¾ ins long (max)
Engraved with the figure of a Scotsman in his kilt with his sword raised, a three masted war ship flying a British pennant, the Royal crown with flags and cannon, and a portrait bust of the young Queen Victoria. A Curious Emu or Ostrich is also engraved on one horn.
Made from the horn of the Scottish hardy breed of long horn cattle these two beautifully executed horns typify naí¯ve ship portraiture and the British patriotic symbolism often found on scrimshaw. They are the work of a pictorial master.
