inscribed to reverse ‘Allesa Algardi’
English circa 1890
Size : 25.5 cm high, 7 cm wide, 5.5 cm deep – 10 ins high, 2¾ ins wide, 2¼ ins deep
The Arts and Crafts movement took its name from the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society founded in London in 1887. Unlike any other artistic movement that had gone before, it sought a great improvement in the arts through the adoption of a new democratic ethic towards living and working.
The Pinto collection is now housed in the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery. It is primarily a collection of Folk Art and Treen. This figure, finely carved in the Renaissance style of Allessandro Algardi ( 1598 - 1654 ) would not have been retained as it does not conform to the concept of 'folk art'.
