An Historic Canon Ball from Nelson’s Flag Ship HMS Victory
Mounted on an oak timber fragment from the ship. A Brass plaque inscribed :
‘A 3lb iron ball together with a piece of timber from HMS Victory to commemorate
the battle of Trafalgar 1805’
Size : 4 cm high, 11 cm deep, 12.5 cm wide – 1½ ins high, 4¼ ins deep, 5 ins wide
7 cm dia. – 2¾ ins dia. ( cannon ball )

The ships companies of the opposing fleets, 27 British sail of the line and 33 French and Spanish, had spent a restless night as they waited for the first light of day and what that might reveal.
At about 5 o'clock in the dim dawn lookouts on several ships sighted the enemy. Able seaman John Brown on the Victory reported 'on Monday 21st at day light the French and Spanish fleets was like a great wood on our lee bow, which cheered the hearts of every British tar in the Victory like lions anxious to be at it'.
Later in the early morning another seaman recorded in a letter home …. 'we cleared away our guns whilst Lord Nelson went round the decks and said "my noble lads, this will be a glorious day for England, whoever lives to see it. I shan't be satisfied with 12 ships this day, as I took at the Nile".'
This year on Friday October 21st was celebrated the 200th anniversary of Admiral Lord Nelson's, and Britain's, greatest naval victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.
