The history of gold and silver wares from the Indian subcontinent is little known before the period of the 19th century International Exhibitions which began with the Great Exhibition of 1851. However, a contemporary description by Scurry notes that coffers in dark rooms contained Tipu's 'gold and plate, both solid and filigree of which last manufacture there was an almost endless variety of most beautiful articles' ( J Scurry; The captivity, sufferings and escapes of James Scurry, who was detained a prisoner during ten years in the dominions of Hyder Ali and Tippoo Saib, London 1824 ).
