Circa 1880
Size : 55 cm high, 46 cm wide, 20 cm deep – 21¾ ins high, 18 ins wide, 8 ins deep
One of the handsomest of all birds the Scarlet Ibis is found from north western Venezuela to Brazil in tropical South America and is famous for its natural bright vivid red colouration. It breeds in large colonies in coastal mangrove swamps, and is sometimes seen in the West Indies, and more rarely flocks stray northward to the shores of the United States. The indigenous tribes of the South American coast always regarded them as edible and still take a few for food, but the depredations of modern guns and polluted waters has meant that the flocks of thousands seen a hundred years ago are now no more.
