The inscription reading in part 'Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, who provides for Esagila and Ezida, the eldest son of Nabopolassar, King of Babylon, am I'.
The impressed inscription was made by the means of a stone or wood or baked clay stamp carved in reverse in high relief.
The majority of ancient bricks with this inscription come from the ruins of Ziggurat, the stepped temple tower which was excavated by the German archaeologist Robert Koldewey in 1913. It was this temple that was almost certainly the origin of the 'tower of babel' mentioned in Genesis xi , I - II.
