A Fine German Boxwood Corpus of Christo Vivo

A Fine German Boxwood Corpus of Christo Vivo
On a carved wood cross
Circa 1680 – 1700
Size : 34 cm high, 19.5 cm wide – 13½ ins high, 7¾ ins wide
By the mid 17th century the two iconographies of Christo Vivo and Christo Morto existed concurrently. In this boxwood carving the pain and torture of Christ, his eyes open, his head upright under the crown of thorns, his mouth open in his call to God, combines the suffering and human frailty of Christ with his ultimate triumph over death and sin.
