The art of the people of the northwest coastal area of New Guinea is a refined mix of the south east Asian Influences of western New Guinea and the more remote formal art of the Sepik river . Geographically the area comprises a long stretch of lowland plains interspersed with rivers running down from the mountains , along the coast north of the Sepik delta .
The tribal art of this area is very little known and rarely appears on the open market . In 1898 a German artefact collector was already complaining of the lack of good old pieces along this coast !
