In the 19 th century medicine developed rapidly in Europe and America . Until then progress had been episodic with triumphs and fresh concepts alternating with long periods of stagnation . In the 19 th century new developments came so quickly that knowledge of all aspects of medical science became impossible for any one individual to attain and so specialisation appeared for the first time . Medical knowledge , embracing huge and diverse fields , split into several distinct branches .
Whilst being essential for furthering a medical student's anatomical knowledge , accurate models such as these were very expensive and , as with the earlier wax anatomical models , they were consequently more often seen in the studies of wealthy collectors than in the anatomy theatre .
