On October 21 st 2005 it is the 200 th celebration of Nelson's Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar .
Trafalgar was the last great fleet action of the Napoleonic Wars and the last to be fought under sail between European powers . Twenty seven ships of the line commanded by Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson intercepted a Franco-Spanish fleet of 33 ships off Cape Trafalgar . This was strung out in line on the port tack while the British ran down on them in two divisions . Because of the light wind , the leading British ships were badly mauled before they broke the enemy line in two places . In the action that followed 17 of the enemy were captured and one blew up .
This was Nelson's last and most glorious and splendidly victorious battle . He was mortally wounded on deck by a French sniper in the rigging of a nearby Man of War and died . It made him the world's most famous Admiral .
