A Curious West African wood club from the Gold Coast of Ghana , the lower shaft bound with leather

Size : 61 cm long – 24 ins long
The Museum label with this club reads : ‘this weapon was responsible for two murders on the Gold Coast ( Ghana ) in 1920 . A native ran amok and murdered his neighbour , then took shelter in the bush . A sergeant in the Gold Coast Defence Force was sent to arrest him , but was himself brutally hit on the head and his skull broken . The force of the blow caused the split in the wood of the weapon . Presented to the Museum by Mrs E Braddick , whose husband was District Commissioner .’
