An Ivory Chinese Scholar's Paper Weight

An Ivory Chinese Scholar’s Paper Weight
18 th Century
Size : 23 cm long , 9.5 cm wide – 9 ins long , 3¾ ins wide
The simplest object in the scholar’s studio is the paper weight . Its function was to keep the paper from curling up or moving while the calligrapher or artist was working . A scroll that was opened for viewing would also close up again if the ends were not held in place with a weight . This beautiful polished rectangular ivory slab is a pure and simple scholar’s object , that when in use would not distract him from his artistic purpose .
A similar ivory scroll weight can been seen next to the the rootwood vase filled with scrolls in the righthand painted wallpaper panel now sold ( on view on our online gallery )
