A Very Fine Carved and Silver Mounted ‘Bugbear’ Coconut Cup or Taster , with bone and horn inlaid eyes . English or French
Circa 1800
When coconuts were first introduced to Europe is unknown but in 1259 a Bishop of Durham bequeathed his silver mounted coconut ‘Indies’ vessel to an Abbott . By the 15 th and 16 th centuries references in England to coconut cups , jugs , and flasks , occur fairly frequently in the inventories of the nobility . In the 18 th century sailors were carving examples on their long voyages home .
