An Australian Aboriginal Parrying Shield , Southwest Queensland

The surfaces of toy shields made for children were left plain and undecorated . Young boys would not yet be familiar or conscious of the visual grammar associated with the simple graphic designs and had no need to stress or state their identity . Only at the completion of a certain stage in a boys initiation was he given his ‘proper’ shield .
