The continent of India has two important river systems; the Ganges and the Indus, and of the two the Indus, now mainly in Pakistan, had the earliest civilisation and gave its name to India. The fertile plain of the Punjab watered by five great tributaries of the Indus had a high culture over 4000 years ago which spread down the lower course of the Indus as far as the sea. Surviving evidence indicates the principal sculptural medium during this period was terracotta and as sacred animals played a big part in the religion of the Indus people, many found objects are naturalistic and abstract representations of animals.
