A Fine Pair of Exceptionally Well Engraved Early Victorian Blond Powder Horns (1800 to 1900 Scotland)

Medium

Cow Horn

Dimensions

45.00cm high (17.72 inches high)

Literature

Engraved with the figure of a Scotsman in his kilt with his sword raised, a three masted war ship flying a British pennant, the Royal crown with flags and cannon, and a portrait bust of the young Queen Victoria. A Curious Emu or Ostrich is also engraved on one horn.
Made from the horn of the Scottish hardy breed of long horn cattle these two beautifully executed horns typify naïve ship portraiture and the British patriotic symbolism often found on scrimshaw. They are the work of a pictorial master.
