A Set of German Gouache on Vellum Depicting a Castle, Ships, Merchants and Their Cargo by a river, perhaps the Rhine (1600 to 1700 Germany)Literature These gouache are most probably from a small table cabinet of architectural form, many of which were produced in the early 17th century. Often made of jet-black ebony, then considered an exotic wood, the cabinets would have panels of pietre dure, carved ivory or of painted scenes such as these.
