These gouache are most probably from a small table cabinet of architectural form, many of which were produced in the early 17th century. Often made of jet-black ebony, then considered an exotic wood, the cabinets would have panels of pietre dure, carved ivory or of painted scenes such as these. They would provide a talking point when placed by a collector upon a table.
